In questo periodo di coronavirus, c’è sicuramente un concetto con cui abbiamo ormai fatto l’abitudine: il distanziamento sociale.
Ne parlano i TG, gli approfondimenti dei talk show, i social media e lo abbiamo – tristemente – imparato grazie al fatto che ormai qualunque nostra attività – dal fare la spesa, al portare in giro il cane, al correre – deve essere fatta a debita distanza: almeno un metro secondo quanto dice il Ministero della Salute.

Il concetto di di distanziamento sociale, ovvero la pratica di riduzione dei contatti mantenendo la distanza sociale dalle persone è un concetto tecnico di tipo non farmacologico dell’epidemiologia, che consiste nella riduzione della situazioni di contatto fisico tra le persone per ridurre la probabilità di infezione e controllare la diffusione di una malattia contagiosa [fonte: Wikipedia ITA].

Capisco la terminologia tecnica dell’epidemiologia, ma ogni volta che sento usare questo concetto lo sento come profondamente sbagliato. Perché?
Perché per evitare la propagazione del contagio non non stiamo praticando la distanza sociale, bensì la distanza fisica: ovvero stiamo limitando i contatti fisici con le altre persone ma stiamo mantenendo un contatto sociale, relazionale con gli altri grazie alle opportunità permesse dai media digitali e dai social media.

Questo mi ha portato alla seguente domanda: perché si usa il termine distanziamento sociale quando in realtà è un distanziamento fisico?
Semplice: perché l’epidemiologia è una disciplina del XIX secolo.

Nel XIX secolo la vicinanza sociale presupponeva la vicinanza fisica: ovvero io per interagire con le persone dovevo essere fisicamente presente nello stesso spazio-tempo delle persone con cui interagivo.
Il XX secolo prima – lettere, telefono – e il XXI secolo poi – internet, social media – ci hanno abituato alla possibilità di interagire con le persone anche in mancanza della loro presenza fisica. In pratica il XXI secolo ha disaccoppiato il rapporto fra spazio fisico e interazione sociale, vero dogma delle scienze sociali del XIX secolo (a cui l’epidemiologia deve una parte del suo vocabolario tecnico).

Nel XXI secolo la distanza sociale non esiste se non come esplicita scelta delle persone, mentre la distanza fisica è una possibilità piuttosto concreta (come stiamo amaramente imparando).

Quindi quando sentiamo dire in TV “distanza sociale” ricordate che in realtà stanno intendendo “distanza fisica”.
In pratica stiamo ascoltando un linguaggio da XIX secolo, in un medium del XX secolo, in una situazione sociale da XXI secolo.

PS: tra l’altro non sono il solo a trovare “antica” questa espressione. Su Wikipedia di lingua inglese si sta discutendo che la voce “distanza sociale” sia rinominata in “distanza fisica”.
