Il primo strumento in questo senso è sicuramente Google NGram: lo strumento di diretta derivazione di Google Books che permette di studiare l’andamento di diverse parole chiave nel corso del tempo all’interno dell’enorme database di libri digitalizzati di che Google mette e disposizione.
E’ uno strumento interessante sia come storia della letteratura, sia come specchio dei cambiamenti economici e sociali.
Lo scorso 16 gennaio 2014 Google ha rilasciato un nuovo strumento di culturomics che fa riferimento al mondo della musica invece che al mondo del libro.

Non solo: isolando i singoli generi musicali è possibile ricercare nei sottogeneri: per esempio dal metal vedere l’evoluzione del trash metal, black metal, progressive metal e così via dicendo.
La fonte dati di questa splendida visualizzazione è Google Play, il marketplace di android per la vendita di contenuti (app e musicali), ovvero quanti utenti hanno quello specifico brano nella loro libreria e altri dati relativi al brano/album in questione.
Infatti i dati vengono aggiornati settimanalmente.
Lo strumento è utile per vedere – per esempio – ascesa e declino di un genere musicale, la crescita e la stabilizzazione (o l’improvvisa scomparsa) di un gruppo o di un cantante, oppure vedere (in maniera indiretta) come è evoluto genere, quando un genere comincia a codificarsi e così via dicendo.
Quello che ha di interessante, è che ad ogni genere musicale vengono associati brani e artisti, perciò può essere considerato anche un modo per decidere di farsi una cultura – per esempio – nel drum’n’bass o nella dance pop.
Uno dei limiti dell’applicazione è che non è possibile cercare le cose per anno: per sesmpio non è possibile vedere lo “stato di salute” di un genere musicale
Sono sicuro che è uno strumento che incuriosirà (e farà incavolare) tutti gli appassionati di musica: sia per la capacità di navigare nell’universo della musica sia per i criteri di classificazione degli artisti rispetto ai generi.
Per la classificazione dei generi, se ho ben capito, comandano gli id3 e tutti gli altri tag messi dagli utenti sui brani. Molto interessante, soprattutto che prima del 1960 il genere più ascoltato è il jazz 🙂 credo che anche qui venga data l’etichetta jazz a cose che magari non lo sono però
