In questi giorni nel mio Dipartimento di Scienze Umanistiche dell’Università di Catania, ovvero l’ex Monastero dei Benedettini, si sta svolgendo il Trailers Film Fest, il festival dei trailers cinematografici (anche dei libri, i booktrailers) che durerà fino al prossimo 3 ottobre 2015.
Come spesso capita, durante il Trailers Film Fest si svolgono una serie di eventi paralleli.
Uno di questi si è svolto ieri ed è stata la presentazione di un libro, molto interessante per gli appassionati del genere (ma non solo).
Il libro dal titolo Walkers and Biters. L’invasione del nemico disumano in The Walking Dead (Euno Edizioni) è stato scritto dal mio amico e collega Alessandro De Filippo, ed è una analisi dettagliata degli schemi narrativi e delle relative interpretazioni della serie The Walking Dead.
Per presentare il libro sono state chiamate diverse persone.
Oltre all’ospite Alessandro De Filippo (docente di Storia e critica cinematografica all’Università di Catania) ci sono stati Sissi Sardo (docente di Semiotica e Linguistica dei media, Università di Catania), Chiara D’Amico e ovviamente il sottoscritto, nel suo ruolo di docente di Sociologia dei Processi Culturali e Comunicativi.
La Sissi Sardo ha iniziato l’incontro parlando degli archetipi connessi alla figura dello zombie. Magari non tutti la conoscono, ma Sissi (la chiamo per nome perché è un’amica) ha alle spalle una serie di studi molto interessanti di impostazione da storica della lingua, sull’uso del linguaggio nei media.
Pertanto è riuscita a sviscerare la questione delle formule narrative presenti nella serie TV e del loro interesse come sviluppo di archetipi letterari, alcuni dei quali presenti anche nella tradizione folkloristica del sud italia.
Chiara D’Amico si è soffermata sulle web serie arricchiscono l’intreccio narrativo di The Walking Dead.
In particolare si è concentrata sul webisode che vede protagonista la storia dello zombie donna che Rick Grimes si trova a uccidere durante il pilot della serie, sottolineando che pur essendo collettività, per esigenze narrative e drammaturgiche si è scelto di concentrarsi su uno zombie in particolare.
Osservazione ripresa dall’intervento di Alessandro de Filippo il quale si è concentrato sul vuoto narrativo con cui inizia la serie: il poliziotto Rick Grimes colpito durante un inseguimento entra in coma e si risveglia dopo quello che sembra essere molto tempo in un ospedale che porta con evidenza i segni di una catastrofe che poi scoprirà essere catastrofe zombie. L’interpretazione simbolica data da Alessandro (disclaimer: è un’amico pure lui) è che il vuoto narrativo è simile al “vuoto narrativo” fra i cittadini americani west coast che per via del fuso orario sono andati a dormire il 10 settembre del 2001 e si sono svegliati l’11 settembre 2001 in un mondo che l’attentato alle torri gemelle aveva profondamente modificato.

Io invece ho fatto un esperimento di cultural analytics.
Per chi non lo sapesse, la cultural analytics è quel programma di ricerca a metà fra digital humanities e studi sociologici della cultura che applica le potenzialità dei big data allo studio dei fenomeni culturali (il nome è stato coniato Lev Manovich).
Se volete saperne di più nel parlo in maniera dettagliata nel mio ultimo libro Il computer come macroscopio (si, è un momento promozionale).
Ovviamente è un esperimento, richiederebbe una ulteriore analisi dei dati per essere scientifico come lo intendo io.
Ma la linea tracciata mi sembra promettente.
La mia idea è stata usare la cultural analytics per un caso di studio materialista dell’immaginario.
Per intenderci: dire che Godzilla è ispirato alla profonda paura giapponese per la bomba atomica, è fare un’interpretazione materialista (paura della bomba) dell’immaginario (Godzilla).
Pertanto mi sono posto una domanda semplice: quali sono i motivi sociologici perché gli zombi sembrano andare tanto di moda?
Per rispondere a questa domanda ho usato tutti gli strumenti a mia disposizione: Google ngram, analisi di IMDB, strumenti di interrogazione del gradimento delle serie TV sempre usando IMDB eccetera.

L’argomentazione che ho usato è stata la seguente.
I dati mostrano che la cultura dell’immaginario zombie sta crescendo di interesse a discapito di altri simili protagonisti dell’immaginario orrorifico come vampiri e licantropi. L’ipotesi del successo degli zombie sta nel fatto che con il loro comportamento in quanto collettività e il loro agire privi di cervello, sono una metafora – negativa – usata per descrivere l’atteggiamento gregario e acritico che alcune persone hanno quando si lasciano prendere la mano da social network e social media.
Per analizzare The Walking Dead come cultura pop-fandom, ho usato il concetto di cultura convergente di Henry Jenkins, per intenderci le film, serie tv, fumetti, videogiochi creano una serie di prodotti che vengono distribuiti su più piattaforme, vengono fagocitati dai fan e vengono reinterpretati dai fan stessi in altre forme.
Io mi sono concentrato sui memi ispirati a The Walking Dead in particolare il meme di Rick e Carl reso celebre in italia dalla pagina Facebook The Walking ghegg.
