Roboetica: un caso emblematico di tecnoetica

Il discorso sulla roboetica credo che sia un discorso interessante non tanto perché il problema sia dietro l?angolo (almeno non nei termini di esseri senzienti), quanto per il tipo di ragionamenti ci costringe a fare. Proverò a fare un paio di riflessioni "a braccio" (si prega i filosofi a non dare particolare peso a queste parole scritte di getto…)

Principio di Galatea
Per prima cosa ci costringerà a relazionarci con un totalmente altro come un essere artificiale. Al momento non abbiamo gli strumenti per entrare in rapporto con questi nuovi ?elettrodomestici?, ma arriverà ben presto il momento in cui la convivenza tra robot e umani sarà sempre più sentita. Le avvisaglie ci sono tutte: in Giappone negli ultimi tempi c?è stato un boom di vendite di AIBO, il cane robot della Sony, che sta progressivamente incrinando il mercato degli animali da compagnia. Sempre in Giappone la National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, ha messo a punto un programma di Pet Therapy chiamato Progetto Paro che invece di usare animali in carne ed ossa, usa cuccioli di foca-robot. Quello che è interessante è che queste tecnologie diventeranno strumenti rispetto ai quali riversare il nostro patrimonio emozionale. Vale in questo caso il principio di Galatea, la statua di avorio trasformata in donna da Venere per soddisfare le preghiere di Pigmalione, lo scultore ormai completamente invaghito della sua opera. Dal mito di Galatea e Pigmalione possiamo desumere una massima per cominciare a ragionare su questi temi: una relazione affettiva profonda è reale quanto reale sono disposti a considerarla i soggetti coinvolti. Pensiamo al rapporto che si potrebbe instaurare tra una persona e il corrispettivo robotico di una bambola gonfiabile: che tipo di rapporto potrebbe essere? Sindrome del Golem
Bestia nera del rapporto uomo-robot è senza dubbio il timore che robot creati per mansioni specifiche (lavoro, protezione) possano ribellarsi o ? perlomeno ? sfuggano al controllo. La paura ha sempre fatto parte del rapporto uomo-robot fin dai tempi più remoti. La stessa parola robot nasce per designare operai meccanici che alla fine si ribellano al proprio padrone. Per sottolineare quanto antica sia questa idea mi piace definirla sindrome di Golem, dal nome della creatura della tradizione ebraica Yddish, resa celebre da un racconto di Gustav Meyrink, in cui si parla di una creatura di argilla (il robot) creata dal il rabbino Loew (lo scienziato) che gli diede vita imprimendogli sulla fronte la parola ?verità? (il software). La storia racconta come il Golem, creato con lo scopo di difendere il ghetto di Praga dai nemici della comunità ebraica, alla fine diventasse un pericolo per gli stessi abitanti del ghetto, tanto da costringere lo stesso rabbino Loew a distruggerlo. Vale la pena preoccuparsi per delle macchine autonome che perdono il controllo? Forse si. La DARPA ha nel suo budget un progetto di finanziamento di ben 5 diversi progetti che dovrebbero dar vita a robot per uso militare: robot per la ricognizione di zone di guerra, smart dust, ovvero nanorobot che sparsi sul territorio si trasformano in sensori intelligenti e così via dicendo. È prematuro parlare di terminator, ma credo che sia una questione di tempo, non di tecnologia.

Assunto della Ferrari
Concludo questo lungo post con una riflessione di tipo metodologica. Perché parlare di roboetica, quando ancora i robot sono dei computer sofisticati, ma limitati? Credo che per la roboetica 
– la parte futuristica della tecnoetica – valga il principio della Ferrari. Ovvero: perché si spende quel fiume imponente di denaro nelle corse di formula 1?
C’è un ritorno economico? Si, c’è, lo sappiamo tutti. Le corse automobilistiche sono dei grandi laboratori
all’aperto che servono per testare tecnologie che verranno adottate nelle automobili prodotte in serie. Stessa cosa per la roboetica: il problema è lontano, ma è bene prendere familiarità con questi diversi modi di ragionare quando la ?rivoluzione robotica? sarà all?inizio. (PS: tra l?altro la riflessione filosofica sui robot non è nuova. Già Hilary Putnam aveva cominciato a porre problemi di ordine morale rispetto ai robot in un suo
paper del 1964 dal titolo I robot: macchine o vita creata
artificialmente? (Mente, linguaggio e realtà, Adelphi, Milano,
pp.416-438)
