I filmati di sopra rappresentano dei soggetti sociali con cui nel prossimo futuro saremmo chiamati a fare i conti, e che per amor di titoli ad effetto potremmo chiamare organismi ciberneticamente modificati.
Il filmato a sinistra rappresenta le gare di Aimee Mullins, mentre il filmato a destra è la ripresa dei 400m di Oscar Pistorius ai Golden Gala dell’Atletica a Roma lo scorso luglio.
Ed è proprio quest’ultimo protagonista di una delle polemiche più interessanti di questa settimana da un punto di vista tecnoetico che potremmo chiamare “il caso Pistorius”.
La storia è nota.
Oscar Pistorius, classe 1986, è un atleta di origine sudafricana che una malformazione congenita lo costrinse all’amputazione delle gambe in tenera età.
Ciò non gli ha impedito di praticare sport, prima per passione, poi per riabilitazione ed in fine per agonismo.
In questi ultimi giorni la stampa si sta occupando sistematicamente del caso Pistorius per quello che possiamo chiamare un caso interessante di adattamento culturale alla tecnologia.
Ovvero Pistorius pur essendosi qualificato per le Olimpiadi di Pechino è stato ritenuto non adatto a gareggiare perché le sue protesi in fibra di carbonio, gli consentono delle prestazioni superiori ai propri colleghi dotati di gambe normali.
Così si è pronunciata la Federazione Internazionale di Atletica Leggera (IAAF) sulla scorta di un rapporto redatto da Gert Peter Brueggemann – direttore dell’istituto di Biomeccanica dell’Università di Colonia – che ha verificato sperimentalmente che paragonato ad 5 altri atleti dotati di gambe “tradizionali”, Pistorius sarebbe in grado di consumare il 25% di energia in meno.
Per questo motivo, Pistorius contravverrebbe alla regola di gara 144.2 secondo cui è proibito:
(e) Use of any technical device that incorporates springs, wheels or any other element that provides the user with an advantage over another athlete not using such a device.
Ovviamente attraverso i suoi legali, il giovane atleta sudafricano ha dichiarato di volersi appellare alla decisione della IAAF.
La vicenda è quantomeno affascinante perché si porta con sé due palesi contraddizioni.
La prima è una contraddizione nella forma: la decisione non può adagiarsi sulla questione inerente alle protesi, perché altrimenti c’è il rischio che Pistorius sia frutto di un razzismo biologico secondo cui gareggia con gli umani solo chi è umano per evitare un confronto che non sia alla pari. Quindi implicitamente la sentenza stabilisce che il cyber-corridore non sia umano, il che è una conseguenza poco appetibile dal punto di vista giuridico. Secondo la decisione della IAAF, infatti, le gambe di Pistorius sono paragonabili a molle oppure a ruote, snaturandone così la dimensione funzionale di parte integrante del corpo, per quanto ben progettate.
Mutatis mutandis, sarebbe come dire che i ciechi non possono essere considerati umani poiché usano il bastone per poter vedere, oppure i sordi non lo siano perché usano protesi uditive per poter sentire.
La seconda più che una contraddizione è una forma strisciante di ipocrisia.
Mi riferisco al doping chimico. Tutti sanno che in atletica – così come negli altri sport agonistici e milionari – c’è il rischio che competizioni e le classifiche siano falsate perché c’è chi usa sostanze chimiche proibite per ottimizzare prestazioni atletiche, come la cronaca sportiva recente e non ci ha ormai abituato. In quel caso atleti spregiudicati hanno pensato bene di ricorrere a stimolatori metabolici per migliorare il rendimento – poniamo – per abbattere del 25% il consumo di energia.
Il problema è che non è visibile a occhio nudo il loro fattore di stimolo, anzi è palesemente contro le regole della competizione equa poiché hanno le caratteristiche degli altri concorrenti per cui l’aiuto chimico è un qualcosa in più che esce dalle regole.
Però in quel caso con opportuni accorgimenti è possibile essere in gara finché qualcuno non rivela il trucco.
L’osservazione che vuole che quello di Pistorius sia un doping tecnologico, non può che essere una battuta, perché il doping da’ una marcia in più a quelli che comunque avrebbero le carte in regola per competere ad armi pari con altri concorrenti professionisti come loro. Invece le gambe di Pistorius non sono una marcia in più poiché senza quelle non potrebbe gareggiare.
Perché non ce le ha, le gambe.
Il caso Pistorius è interessante perché ha posto all’attenzione dell’opinione pubblica la questione di nuove forme di soggettività umana per cui le istituzioni sociali – nella fattispecie lo sport – non sono ancora preparate.
Un caso simile, ma con meno clamore, venne suscitato qualche anno fa dall’atleta paralimpica e modella, Aimee Mullins, classe 1976.
Anch’essa vittima di una malformazione congenita che la costrinse a solo un anno all’amputazione degli arti inferiori, sali agli onori delle cronache non solo per gli ottimi successi durante le gare di atletica leggera per disabili, ma anche per la straordinaria bellezza che la fece diventare protagonista di una serie di servizi fotografici, fa cui quello famoso di Lynn Johnson per la rivista Sports Illustrated.
Pistorius e Mullins sono due casi di nuove forme di umanità – mutanti tecnologici se piace la metafora – con cui il futuro dovrà fare i conti. Anzi – più correttamente – il futuro dei reduci delle guerre in medio oriente dovrà fare i conti.
Concludo con una piccola riflessione.
E’ difficile non convenire – nelle conseguenze non nelle motivazioni – con la IAAF nell’escusione di Pistorius alle olimpiadi di Pechino 2008, perché le rivoluzioni si fanno gradualmente e non dall’oggi al domani.
Io però l’avrei fatto gareggiare lo stesso, magari non registrando l’eventuale record, per dare un segno di “normalità” per chi invece si sta faticosamente adattando a una nuova accezione del concetto perché magari non ha più gambe, braccia ma “equivalenti funzionali”.
Ma come scrive Richard Matheson nello straordinario “Io sono la leggenda” (da cui è stato tratto il recente film con Will Smith): la normalità è un concetto di molti, e non di uno solo.
In attesa delle olimpiadi che facciano disputare i 400 metri piani uomini, 400 metri piani donne, 400 metri piani organismi ciberneticamente modificati.
Non so se il termine cubernetico sia appropriato. Anche se si tratta di dispositivi artificiali, sono inerti, diciamo, passivi, non sono dei veri meccanismi.
Inoltre, il termine cibernetico è meglio associato all’elettronica, che non è relativo al caso in questione.
Né riesco a comprendere perché un atleta munito di arti artificiali dovrebbe non essere considerato umano solo perché non viene considerato al pari degli altri atleti. Cosa c’entra?

il termine cibernetico di solito viene utilizzato in riferimento ai dispositivi elettronici, ma in realtà la cibernetica si occupa(va) del controllo e della comunicazione nell’uomo e nelle macchine. Quindi le gambe artificiali di Pistorius e della Mullins possono essere considerate strumenti artificiali per il controllo del movimento e in quanto tale strumenti cibernetici (e non bionici perchè in quel caso la gamba sarebbe dovuta essere elettronica).
In realtà il fatto che Pistorius non sia umano è una conseguenza logica della decisione della IAAF, la quale ha escluso il corridore sudafricano perché ha equiparato le sue gambe a ruote o molle, mentre in realtà sono gambe per quanto artificiali.
Quindi Pistorius è un ibrido uomo-macchina, sempre stando al ragionamento IAAF.
In pratica il regolamento della IAAF non è pronto per persone come Pistorius, da qui il paradosso.
Non voglio mettere in dubbio l’umanità di Pistorius – per carità – mi piaceva solo giocare con le nuove declinazioni del concetto di essere umano che la tecnologia mette a nostra disposizione
Convengo con te che forse l’argomentazione che uso non è precisamente “stringente”, ma la possibilità che un regolamento sportivo venga messo in discussione a causa di un “cyborg” mi sembrava un’occasione troppo ghiotta per non poterla sfruttare.
