Sono da qualche giorno felice utilizzatore dell’oggetto del desiderio più trendy e interessante di queste ultime settimane, ovvero lo Eee Pc della Asus, la nuova generazione di UMPC low-cost.
Altri prima di me si sono cimentati in recensioni, analisi tecniche e quant’altro e lo hanno fatto in maniera molto più professionale di quanto ne sarei stato capace io.
Preferirei invece concentrarmi su due cose che l’uso di questo ultra-portatile ha posto alla mia attenzione.
Quaderno Olivetti: un’occasione mancata
Tramite articolate vicissitudini che evito di raccontarvi, qualche tempo fa sono diventato il fortunato possessore di un quaderno Olivetti, oggetto delle meraviglie dell’anno di grazia 1992. Internet era di là da venire e sui computer girava Windows 3.1 solo una volta installato il DOS 5.0, mentre computer portatile voleva dire un trabbicolo pesante diversi chili.
Non però il Quaderno Olivetti.
Macchina elegante e perfetta nelle sue dimensioni, antesignano di quella classe di computer che sarebbero stati chiamati subnotebook, il quaderno Olivetti era avanti diversi lustri declinando in maniera completamente innovativa concetti come portabilità, trasportabilità funzionalità. Concetti che sarebbero diventati il mantra dell’industria informatica solo in tempi più recenti. Con il suo processore 386, 20 Mb di HD e 1Mb di RAM per un totale di poco più di un chilo di peso, il suo software per il lavoro da ufficio, aveva tutto ciò che serviva per il professionista in costante movimento, che magari si spostava da un cliente all’altro per motivi di consulenza.
E’ facile che chi lo abbia usato provi una forma di nostalgia in questi ultimi mesi di UMPC.
Io ne sono entrato in possesso solo da relativamente poco, non mi posso permettere il lusso di provare nostalgia.
Però un magone lo provo, perché il Quaderno Olivetti – con il suo design, la sua bellezza (basta dare un’occhiata a questo slideshow), quello che ha significato per l’informatica – rimanda a un tempo che non c’è più, quando l’Italia era l’avanguardia in alcuni settori tecnologici di punta tra cui l’informatica, e non mera colonia per esportatori di telefonini. Sarà paradossale, ma in questo periodo di globalizzazione e di Ikea-forming, mi piacerebbe andare in giro con un computer ultraportatile low cost italiano.
UMPC. La covata malefica
E invece no, niente ultraportatile italiano. Devo rifarmi su un prodotto internazionale come lo EeePc dell’Asus. Poco male.
C’è l’ho da qualche settimana, e già ha conquistato me e una serie di amici che mi ha visto all’opera con questo aggeggio. Per non parlare degli studenti che da un giorno all’altro a lezione mi hanno visto passare dal mio solito Vaio, al EeePC.
Infatti io lo uso per proiettare le slide durante le lezioni, dato che spesso sono in giro per Roma (ma non solo) fondamentalmente per fare lezione quindi mi serve un coso ultraportatile, leggero senza tanti fronzoli.
Ho scoperto che Xandros (già Corel) – il sistema operativo – è della famiglia Debian, il che mi porterà a cercare software aggiuntivo da installare per fare cose sempre più mirabolanti (almeno spero: è la mia prima Linux-esperienza)
Solo cominciando a usarlo ho capito perché esistono diversi siti italiani di appassionati dell’EeePC come Eeepcasus.it oppure E3pc.it. E’ bello, è utile e ci si possono fare diversi mod e hack, ergo…
Quello che mi ha colpito è la prossima invasione degli UMPC, ce ne sono di diverso tipo e tutti piuttosto interessanti (nel rapporto prezzo/prestazioni).
Credo che vedere qualcuno che usa un UMPC, tipo lo EeePc, per strada o ad un convegno, presto sarà un’esperienza piuttosto comune. E così i computer portatili con schermo da 15 wide diventeranno i nuovi computer da casa.
C’è una domanda che mi ronza per la testa: perchè Asus ha chiamato il suo gioiellino in questo modo imbecille?
Davvero un nome(?) terribile. Certe volte le scelte di marketing sono guidate da logiche incomprensibili.
Comunque deve essere un gran bell’oggetto. Non sono un tecno-maniaco,ma questo sub-sub notebook mi affascina: devo resistere alla tentazione di comprarlo, visto che in realtà al momento non mi serve. Ma è una lotta tra l’angioletto del risparmio ed il diavoletto del consumo (alimentato dal prezzo relativamente basso del “peccato”)…
Cavolo è davvero bello l’Olivetti! Inoltre ha una disposizione dei pulsanti incredibile con un monitor anche più grande!

Effettivamente è un oggetto molto carino. Io ho convinto me stesso facendo leva sul fatto che sono spessissimo in giro a mostrare PPT, ma non ti nascondo che l’aspetto fascinoso dell’oggetto ha esercitato su di me una pressione non da poco. Un altro elemento che ha contribuito all’acquisto è linux: per me potrebbe diventare uno strumento per avvicinarmi a questa piattaforma (che mi ha sempre “spaventato”). Infatti ormai passo il mio tempo libero a cercare forum per capire come vedere la TDT con il mio eee!

BHe… rivedere il vecchio Quaderno mi ha fatto fare un tuffo al cuore… Io l’ho usato e ricordo che essendo DOS puro si poteva, sulla carta, installare anche windows 3.0 (con risultati pessimi visto che lo schermo non si illuminava). Ricordo che ci smanettai parecchio ma un bel di’ defunse il circuito di ricarica delle batterie: se provavo a ricaricarlo si surriscaldava a livelli critici senza avere poi un’autonomia decente. E qui salta fuori la magagna Olivetti: l’assistenza tenne il mio bimbo per 9 mesi (una gravidanza…) ma il parto fu pessimo perchè il bimbo continuò a non funzionare più se non attaccato alla corrente ma con l’obbligo di staccarlo ogni ora pena la fusione. Grazie per avermi ricordato quei tre anni trascorsi con il Quaderno.
Oddio, sei riuscito a mettere il buon, vecchio, indimenticabile Quaderno vicino all’Eee PC, avrei dato chissà cosa per farlo quando ho scritto la mia recensione (vedi sito linkato nel nick del commento), dove infatti avevo parlato proprio del piccoletto della scuderia Olivetti, che a suo tempo ho avuto modo di usare e di cui mi sono addirittura ‘portato apresso’ le applicazioni TSR del DOS anche su altri computer. Che ricordi!
Comunque è incredibile come l’Eee PC stia riuscendo a fra breccia fra informatici di ogni età, esperienza e stile di vita (e sesso, ovviamente!). Grazie anche da parte mia per avermi permesso di rivedere il Quaderno Olivetti, che mai potrò dimenticare e che è ovviamente legato a un periodo della mia vita informatica davvero ricco di esperienze e soddisfazioni (che in parte l’Eee PC sta rinnovando, anche dopo oltre due decenni!).

Per prima cosa grazie del commento, così ho scoperto un’altra interessantissima fonte dove trovare hacks per lo Eee, cioè il tuo sito, e provvedo subito a feedarla.
E poi non credevo si sollevare l’interesse di tante persone così desiderose di raccontare la propria esperienza con quel bellissimo oggetto che è il subnotebook Olivetti. Quasi quasi ci faccio un pensierino e provo a fare una ricerca intervistando chi – come te e Antonio – lo ha usato e ricorda gli ultimi anni ruggenti dell’informatica made in Italy.

Un vero tuffo al cuore rivederlo.
Il primo era quello a cui sono più legato. Olivetti ha sempre fatto le cose a metà. Grandi idee e pessimo marketing. Nel primo, puro DOS senza Windows con una durata estrema (altro che netbbok!) avevo installato un DOS completo, perché l’oggetto nasceva con un software veramente stupido, e un Microsoft Works per DOS e ci facevo tutto. Lo schermo non retroilluminato, oltre a far durare molto più le batterie, ti consentiva di leggere in piena luce a condizioni proibitive per i comuni catafalchi notebook.
Ricordo viaggi in treno e articoli e racconti scritti con il Quaderno.
Invidio un po’ il tuo affare, ma nel contempo sono felice che ci siano ancora degli enfant prodige sopravvissuti fino ad oggi. Quali prodotti possono vantare una simile sopravvivenza e un così grande amore?

Ok. arrivo a commentare dopo qualche anno. Nessuno mi leggerà, ma poco male.
Ebbene: ho avuto, ovvero comprato, sia l’EeePC di Asus sia il Quaderno Olivetti. Nopn so quale dei due fosse peggio. La prima versione dell’Assus era un disastro. Entrare in rete era un miracolo. La versione di Linux supportata faceva pena. Unico vantaggio: costava poco. Le versioni successive sotto Windows, erano meglio, anche se prime aveva consumi terrificanti (= obbligati ad andare in giro con l’alimentatore). Le ultime erano molto buone.
Il Quadermo PC di Olivetti è sempre stato una fetecchia. Credoi di essere stato l’unico non solo a comprarle, ma a comprarne pure due. Il secondo me lo vendette un giornalista che come tanti che scrivevano per dei quotidiani l’avevano avito gratis. Me lo girò qualche giorno la conferenza.
Non ci si poteva fare praticamente nulla, eppure stavano arrivando i primi Windows veri. L’unica cosa interessante era il registratore audio incorporato. Ma cosatava quasi un milione di lire. Poco dopo, arrivo la versione più smart, retroilluminata, ci si poteva far girare Windows, ma costava 1 milione e mezzo. Con cento mila in più si poteva comprare una delle prime v ersioni economiche di Compaq, e poi di ZDS, che erano computer veri. Per carità: fu un insuccesso pienamente meritato, così come altri pessimi prodotti di Olivetti a quel tempo (come la stampante prodotta da canon e da 10 milioni di lire in tecnologia bubble-jet, con cui secondo la pubblicità si poteva fare anche una piccola newsletter aziendale. Dopo aver venduto l’azienda tanto era lenta e incredibilmente costosa nei materiali.
