Uno dei modelli più utilizzati per spiegare la diffusione delle tecnologie è la cosiddetta curva a campana o curva di Rogers, uno strumento che parte dal presupposto che una innovazione – tecnologica, ma non solo – si propaga per contagio fra gli utilizzatori e gli utenti potenziali, secondo un modo standard, definito dalla diversa propensione al cambiamento degli utenti e dalla variabile tempo

Per il motivo di cui sopra, gli utenti utilizzatori di tecnologia si distinguono in innovatori, primi utilizzatori (early adopters), maggioranza iniziale, maggioranza tardiva e ritardatari.
Ho usato questo modello qualche tempo fa per provare a spiegare gli elementi “strutturali” del successo di Facebook.

Vincenzo Cosenza, ha svolto una ricerca per vedere chi – nell’attuale panorama dei social network – ha raggiunto la maggioranza tardiva, ovvero il numero di utenti che preannuncia la saturazione.
Per fare questo ha ipotizzato un numero di utenti potenziali pari a un miliardo di persone e usando diverse fonti ha calcolato in quale punto della curva di Rogers (nella variante di Geoffrey Moore, che postula un punto di discontinuità detto burrone tra primi utilizzatori e maggioranza iniziale).

In questa sua stima, tra i social network innovatori ci sono Friendfeed, Foursquare e Google Plus. Gli early adopters sono Linkedin, Bebo, Orkut, Badoo, MySpace. La maggioranza iniziale vede VKontakte, RenRen e Twitter. Mentre Qzone e Facebook fanno – ovviamente visto le cifre – parte della maggioranza tardiva.

Io comunque da ricercatore di social media non posso fare a meno di fare tre osservazioni sulla criticità che solleva questa mappa.

1. Comparabilità.
E’ una cosa che ha sollevato De Biase e su cui io concordo. VKontakte è Russo, Orkut è “ormai” brasiliano,  RenRen Cinese così come Qzone. Come è possibile metterli sulla stessa curva con social network esplicitamente anglo-centrici (nel senso della lingua)?

2. Valore della stima
Perché gli utenti potenziali dovrebbero essere un miliardo?
In realtà dovrebbero essere – vado così ad occhio – la popolazione dei paesi del G8 sommati alla popolazione  dei paesi che siedono nel consiglio di sicurezza ONU da dividere per il tasso di penetrazione medio della rete internet in tali nazioni (lo so è una follia).
Scegliere un miliardo di persone perchè – immagino – Facebook si sta avvicinando, vuol dire fare un favore a Facebook (e ai SNS meno diffusi).

3. Senso della curva
La curva di Rogers nasce con lo scopo di misurare il tasso di diffusione di una tecnologia in una popolazione data, distinguendo diversi profili psicografici – innovatori, primi utilizzatori…. eccetera.
Non credo che la cosa abbia lo stesso senso posizionando sulla curva i social netork e non le persone. Che senso ha dire che Google Plus è innovatore mentre Facebook maggioranza tardiva?

Comunque complimenti a Vincenzo, il lavoro è interessante tanto da portarmi a scrivere un lungo post nonostante il caldo e le mie non-ferie…

    Io aggiungerei alle tue critiche la differente focalizzazione dei sn: ha senso paragonare Linkedin a Facebook? e Zinga? Secondo me gli studi sulla televisione, in particolare lo iato tra Tv generalista e tematica, possono aiutare a comprendere meglio il livello di specializzazione che si va affermando nel campo dei sn: chi pargonerebbe gli ascolti di Current Tv con quelli di Rai1?
