L’ultimo numero di Technology Review contiene un articolo molto bello sui social graph, ovvero sulle tecniche di visualizzazione dei rapporti sociali online.

Blogosfera 1
Come dice il titolo è la visualizzazione della blogosfera. La grafica è opera di Matthew Hurst dei Microsoft Live Labs che ha usato l’applicazione Blogpulse per produrre i dati che gli sono serviti per dare vita all’immagine. Come si vede, c’è un nucleo centrale (the core) che rappresenta un gruppo di blog da cui partono moltissimi link.
Blogosfera 2
La parte centrale della blogosfera è strutturata in due parti. Quella di sinistra che è costituita da blog che si occupano prevalentemente di politica, quella di destra che contiene blog relativi a tecnologia e gadget. Le due aree sono connesse tra loro da quei blog che si occupano di entrambi gli argomenti. Hurst nota che i link reciproci (segnati in rosa) sono molto più presenti nella parte relativa ai blog politici e meno nella parte ai blog tecnologici.
Comment flow
Dietmar Offenhuber e Judith Donath del MIT Sociable Media Group, hanno creato una visualizzazione particolare – Comment Flow – che consente di tracciare il modo attraverso cui gli utenti dei social network lasciano i propri commenti ad altre persone. Questo sistema permette di vedere effettivamente la consistenza dei legami fra utenti, piuttosto che la semplice lista di amici di Facebook o MySpace.
Twitter Social Network
L’immagine rappresenta il flusso di conversazioni che sono avvenute in Twitter nell’aprile 2007. Il colore più acceso indica le principali fonti delle notizie e delle conversazioni. La visualizzazione è opera di Akshay Java, del eBiquity Research Group presso l’università del Maryland (Baltimore).

L’ultima visualizzazione è opera di Jure Leskovec, Lada Adamic e Bernardo Huberman, direttore dell’Information Dynamics Lab della Hewlett-Packard, e rappresenta due diverse mappe che cercano di spiegare le dinamiche del viral marketing in un ambiente di rete.
La metà superiore rappresenta i processi del WOMM usati per promuovere un libro di medicina, mentre la metà in basso rappresenta i processi sottesi ad una graphic novel giapponese. Come si vede nel secondo caso il marketing virale è molto più efficiente del primo.
