Una ricerca dai numeri impressionanti: 46 paesi rilevati, ottenendo un database pari a 50.000 interviste che corrisponde all’88% della popolazione mondiale.

Sono i dati dello studio di TNS, di cui una parte dei risultati possono essere visti sul sito appositamente progettato per la comunicazione dei dati: Discover Digital Life.

La ricerca è la più grande del suo genere ed ha ottenuto una serie di risultati che da una parte confermano trend già identificati da altri studi (magari meno imponenti), dall’altro invece ha rilevato delle tendenze relativamente nuove.

Alcuni dei risultati sono stati i seguenti:

  • A livello globale, internet è il primo media channel per coloro che accedono alla rete: Il 61% degli utenti mondiali, lo utilizza giornalmente, contro un 54% che usa la TV, 36% la Radio, 32% la Stampa.
  • I consumatori dei mercati in rapida crescita, hanno superato i mercati maturi in termini di comportamenti digitali ed engagement.  Analizzando i comportamenti online, i mercati in rapida crescita come Egitto (56%) e Cina (54%) hanno livelli di engagement  superiori a quelli di Paesi più sviluppati come Giappone (20%), Danimarca (25%), o Finlandia (26%). nonostante spesso i mercati maturi dispongano di infrastrutture di comunicazione più avanzate. L’Italia registra un 47%, evidenziando alti livelli di coinvolgimento della popolazione coinvolta, pur essendo ancora in fase di crescita della penetrazione complessiva di internet sulla popolazione.
  • Fare blog ed essere parte di un social network sono le attività maggiormente interessanti al momento, in particolar modo nei Paesi in via di sviluppo. L’indagine evidenzia come 4 utenti su 5 in Cina (88%) e più di metà in Brasile (51%) hanno scritto il proprio blog o hanno preso parte a forum online, a fronte di un 32% negli Stati Uniti, dove internet è ormai da tempo parte della vita quotidiana. L’Italia registra un 60%, confermando l’interesse e la diffusione dei comportamenti digitali più fortemente legati alla socialità ed alle attività di comunicazione. Inoltre, internet è anche diventata la modalità di default per la gestione e condivisione delle foto fra gli utenti, soprattutto in Asia. Infatti, il numero di internauti che ha caricato foto in rete, su siti di social network o di condivisione di foto, raggiunge il 92% in Tailandia, l’88% in Malesia e l’87% in Vietnam. In Italia il 70%, meno della metà della popolazione che utilizza internet in Germania (48%), mentre in Giappone solo il 28%.
  • La crescita delle attività di social networking spinge il passaggio da pc a mobile internet. Gli utenti di internet in mobilità (via telefono cellulare) dedicano in media più di 3 ore alla settimana ad attività di social networking e solo 2.2 ore all’email. Lo sviluppo dell’utenza internet via cellulare è sostenuta dal bisogno crescente di gratificazione immediata, indubbiamente soddisfatta dalle molteplici offerte di modalità comunicative tipiche dei social networks (walls, instant messaging, email,…). Pensando a come potrà modificarsi ancora lo scenario digitale, l’indagine evidenzia come i consumatori prevedano, per il futuro, un loro utilizzo crescente del social networking in mobilità, superiore a quello attraverso pc. Negli Stati Uniti, per esempio, solo un quarto (26%) degli utenti della rete si aspetta un proprio maggior utilizzo del social networking via pc, a fronte di un 36% via cellulare. In Australia, un 26% contro un 44% ed in Svezia, rispettivamente, un 24% contro un 53%.
  • Un’ulteriore evidenza dello studio, mostra che gli utenti della rete stanno attualmente dedicando una quota maggiore del tempo speso in rete alle attività di social networking, tipo Facebook o LinkedIn, rispetto all’email, nonostante questo genere di attività si sia sviluppato solo negli ultimi anni in molti Paesi. Nei Paesi emergenti, come L’America Latina, il Medio Oriente e la Cina, si spendono mediamente 5.2 ore a settimana contro le 4 utilizzate nelle attività di emailing. Nei Paesi maturi, invece, mediamente, gli internauti passano circa 5.2 ore in attività di gestione della casella di posta elettronica, a fronte di 3.8 ore nel social networking.
  • I maggiori utilizzatori della rete per il social networking sono i Malesi, con 9 ore settimanali dedicate, i Russi (8.1) ed i Turchi (7.7 ore alla settimana). E naturalmente sono sempre i Malesi  a vincere nel numero medio di “amicizie” in rete: con 233 amici nei social network, seguiti, molto da vicino dai Brasiliani (231). I “meno sociali” sono gli abitanti del Giappone (29) e della Tanzania (38). A sorpresa, i Cinesi dichiarano di avere mediamente solo 68 “amici” nella loro rete, nonostante siano forti utilizzatori di questi siti, evidenziando una cultura che privilegia pochi legami, più profondi.

La ricerca di per sè è molto interessante, così come lo è il sito interattivo dal quale scaricare alcune slide rappresentative dei risultati della ricerca.
