Perché Pinterest né mi piace né mi convince

Chiunque segua la quotidianità dei social media, sa perfettamente che il buzz in rete degli ultimi mesi è monopolizzato da una nuova piattaforma che molti ritengono the next big thing.

Sto parlando di Pinterest, una piattaforma di photosharing ovvero di condivisione di immagini e video (anche se al momento questi ultimi non sembrano avere successo) con delle proprietà da social network.

 

Il concept è piuttosto semplice.
Ad ogni account utente corrisponde un profilo che può essere organizzato in bacheche (Board) ed ogni bacheca è tematica, nel senso che l‘utente può inserire le immagini che crede (Pins) classificandole nelle bacheche che ha deciso di aprire e condividerle contemporaneamente su Facebook e/o Twitter o tramite embedding.
L’utente può seguire altre persone, scegliendo di seguire tutte le bacheche o solo alcune.
Il lifestream è un patchwork di immagini provenienti dai nostri contatti, con le quali possiamo interagire inserendole nelle nostre bacheche, apprezzandole con un like o commentandole.

Questa è grosso modo la user experience di Pinterest.
Allora cosa c’è che non va?

A mio avviso tante cosette.

In primo luogo l’assenza di tag.
Io sono un enorme utilizzatore del tagging nei social media, perchè io raccolgo e classifico materiale che spesso voglio recuperare per  lezioni, convegni eccetera.
Le board possono funzionare come spazi di classificazione – è vero – ma se io ho un’infografica divertente sull’uso di social media, dovrei classsificarla sia nella bacheca “Funny” che nella bacheca “Social Media”.
Non mi sembra molto funzionale.

Inoltre l’esperienza di navigazione è un po’ confusa.
Se qualcuno riprende le immagini di qualcun’altro, allora il lifestream comincia ad essere popolato dalla stessa immagine.

Tra l’altro, un’altro sintomo di una confusione nell’utilizzazione della piattaforma è che mi stanno arrivando richieste di follow – che io ricambio – di persone che non hanno immagini oppure che non hanno neanche board.
Magari è il classico disorientamento dei primi periodo dentro uno spazio social nuovo: ma ho i miei dubbi a proposito.

Ad ogni modo, se interessa, il mio account Pinterest lo trovate qui.

Ma ci sono altri problemi, più legati all’ecologia digitale che all’esperienza d’uso.

Per prima cosa il copyright delle immagini.
Pinterest è stata accusata da più parti di essere un vero e proprio sito che ruba le immagini, in barba ai termini d’uso: infatti sembra che la stragrande maggioranza dei pins contravvenga ai termini d’uso.
La situazione ha portato siti celebri – come Flickr – a disattivare la possibilità di condividere le immagini in Pinterest, tanto che adesso la piattaforma ha dovuto rendere disponibile la possibilità per i siti di non far parte dei siti le cui immagini possono essere condivise (opt-out).

Poi c’è il problema del nudo di donna.
I termini d’uso di Pinterest evidenziano che non possono essere condivise immagini pornografiche, violente, che incitano all’odio. Se così fosse, è possibile segnalare le immagini in questione con un form apposito.


La questione è quella del nudo artistico: e qui nulla da obiettare.
Su questo Mashable ha svolto un sondaggio online in cui gli utenti ammettono la presenza di immagini di nudo, ma in quanto artistico non disturbano.
Spesso però i nudi sono classificati nei board thinspo, termine crasi di thin e inspiration resa in maniera gergale, che rappresenta una delle varie declinazione della cultura pro-ana (ovvero la cultura digitale che propaganda l’anoressia come modello di bellezza).
Un altro social network per appassionati di immagini come Tumblr ha proibito l’uso del termine thinspo e altri termini di culture legate alla promozione di forme di disordine alimentare.
Provate a fare una ricerca con thinspo su Pinterest.

Per questi motivi, Pinterest non mi convince e sinceramente anche dal punto di vista dell’usabilità non mi piace.

Magari sistemeranno questi limiti – grazie alla cultura del beta perpetuo dei social media – ma l’imporsi di un sito di photosharing in questo modo, lo ritengo scorretto, o comunque un po’ piratesco: copyright ambiguo, strizzare l’occhio a culture controverse, giocare con l’ambiguità porno/erotismo/arte.

Beninteso, non sono contro il nudo o un bacchettone: figurarsi.
Tumblr ha un ricchissimo campionario di siti softcore (e non), Vi.sualize.us è pieno di immagini erotiche, ma entrambi sviluppano una serie di strategie che permettono di gestire in maniera articolata la circolazione di questo materiale.

Molti lo ritengono la prossima moda nel mondo dei social media: secondo me la sua popolarità è una bolla che scoppierà presto.

  3. A me pare invece che la semplificazione estrema del tipo di interazione che propone stia funzionando bene. Anche Tumblr ha trovato spazio facendo bene o male le stesse cose di WordPress ma in modo più semplice. Allo stesso modo, Pinterest è un ulteriore passo in avanti verso l’editing di contenuti creati da altri. Mi pare che la direzione sia questa.

  4. In parte condivido quello che hai scritto. Comunque sono riuscito a “pinnare” immagini sia di Facebook sia di Flickr 😉

    Su FB è più facile, basta visualizzare l’immagine col tasto destro del mouse e poi cliccare sul bottone Pin del browser.

    Su Flickr è più contorta la cosa, perché il menu del tasto destro è personalizzato. Quindi bisogna trovare il sorgente HTML dell’immagine, incollare la url nel browser e poi via col Pin.
