C’è una scena del film Seven (USA, 1995), in cui il detective William Somerset (interpretato da Morgan Freeman) riesce a identificare il serial killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey) perché un suo amico dell’FBI gli consegna in via confidenziale una lista delle persone che dalle biblioteche hanno preso in prestito libri sui peccati capitali.

L’idea che noi siamo anche ciò che leggiamo, non è nuova.
E’ il principio della coerenza del consumo o effetto Diderot: quello che noi consumiamo (vestiti, cibo, dischi, ….) è un forte indicatore indiretto di nostre altre attività sociali come valori, idee, sentimenti, orientamenti religiosi, tendenze politiche.

Election Heatmap è uno strumento di rappresentazione dei dati che usando come visualizzazione una mappa di calore (heatmap) colloca sulla cartina geografica degli USA delle tonalità di rosso che stanno ad indicare quanto in uno stato vengono acquistati libri di orientamento politico repubblicano rispetto ai libri di ispirazione politica democratica.
Cliccando su ogni singolo stato si ottiene un numero percentuale (dove 100 è il totale dei libri politici venduti negli ultimi 30 giorni con aggiornamenti quotidiani) che dice quanto in quello stato vengono letti libri rossi (Repubblicani) rispetto ai libri blu (democratici).

Ovviamente c’è un disclaimer che suggerisce che leggere un libro non vuol dire votare per quel partito, ma secondo Amazon Election Heatmap, è uno strumento interessante per seguire la conversazione politica sulle elezioni del 6 novembre 2012.

Contro- intuitivamente il colore rosso è associato ai conservatori (repubblicani) e quello blu ai liberal (democratici) per via della puntata del 2000 in cui il today show parlò di stati rossi ee stati blu.
