Uno dei motivi che mi rendono un orgoglioso utente dell’ultimo iPad è l’enorme numero di app relative a data science e data visualization che sono presenti nell’app store  e che sono ottimizzate per le proprietà dello schermo retina.

In questi ultimi giorni sono andato “in giro” per l’app store alla ricerca di applicazioni su social media monitoring, data visualization e tutto il resto e ne ho trovati alcuni molto belli e interessanti.

Uno di questi è Map of the Internet.
Map of the internet è una app gratuita (iPad/iPhone e Android) sviluppata da Steamlock Software e Peer 1 Hosting, che consente di visualizzare internet e i suoi nodi principali.

La mappa consente due tipi di visualizzazione:

una visualizzazione dei nodi di internet proiettati su una mappa 3D del globo,

una visualizzazione dei nodi di internet in forma gerarchica evidenziando i principali hub (secondo il principio di Barabasi per cui internet è una rete scale free ovvero a invarianza di scala).

Inoltre è possibile cercare con una funzione search anche uno specifico dominio internet per vedere in quale nodo l’host si trova localizzato, oppure vedere il nodo dal quale ci stiamo collegando.

Se ciò non bastasse c’è anche una funzione di traceroute in grado di “pingare” il tempo di risposta dei diversi server che rendono possibile la connessione fra i nodi che stiamo cercando.

Se ciò non bastasse, l’applicazione rende disponibile una timeline per vedere la struttura dei nodi internet prima dell’esplosione del social web.

Map of the Internet è uno strumento fantastico per toccare con le dita la complessa architettura di rete di internet, cosa che la rende un ottimo progetto di network mapping oltre che uno strepitoso strumento didattico per chi – come me – si trova spesso a raccontare cosa vuol dire che internet è una rete globale.
