Qualche giorno fa sono stato ospite del progetto dell’Università di Catania PhD Days, che ha il duplice scopo di fornire ai dottorandi dei vari Dipartimenti dell’Università sia degli strumenti per svolgere al meglio il loro lavoro di ricerca, sia un’occasione per conoscersi tra di loro e dall’incontro fra persone diverse – magari – far nascere collaborazioni e progetti comuni.
Il mio seminario dal titolo “Diffondere la ricerca con i social media” è stato quello di illustrare i processi alla base dell’uso dei social media per comunicare la ricerca scientifica.
Il motivo per cui mi è stato chiesto questo particolare seminario è duplice.
In primo luogo perché fin dalle origini di questo blog (2004) – come ben sa chi mi segue – ho sempre utilizzato gli spazi social come modo per fare personal branding usando la leva del docente universitario e del ricercatore scientifico.
In secondo luogo perché la mia mai sopita passione per gli studi sociali della scienza e della tecnologia e la comunicazione della scienza mi hanno spesso portato a lavorare sul rapporto social media/ricerca scientifica con workshop, seminari, pubblicazioni e così via.

L’argomentazione che ho seguito è stata la seguente
Per le loro caratteristiche tecnologiche e per le dinamiche di utilizzo, social media sono a tutti gli effetti degli spazi di relazione sociale e non dei semplici canali di comunicazione, questo vuol dire che vanno utilizzati con le strategie delle relazioni pubbliche – strumenti per costruire rapporti – e non come mezzi di comunicazione di massa – ovvero non come tecnologie per la diffusione dei contenuti.
Anche il ricercatore scientifico che vuole utilizzare questi strumenti per dare la massima visibilità alla sua ricerca e alla propria attività professionale deve considerare alcuni elementi per far si che la circolazione del suo lavoro avvenga seguendo specifiche caratteristiche.
1. FAR CAPIRE SEMPRE IL PROPRIO RUOLO
Uno degli errori che vengono commessi più spesso – dai ricercatori, ma non solo – è quello di non chiarire bene la propria identità. Quando si parla di una ricerca, a che titolo si sta parlando? È la propria ricerca? in questo caso che ruolo si occupa: direttore o membro del team? Se la ricerca è quella di un collega su cui è stato chiesto un parere per quale motivo di parla? Perché si appartiene allo stesso settore? È sempre bene chiarire la propria identità professionale e su internet ci sono modi diversi per farlo: dalla scrittura di una biografia riconoscibile su Twitter a un curriculum accademico dettagliato su Likendin.
2. CHIARIRE SCOPI O RISULTATI DELLA RICERCA.
Una ricerca scientifica è un processo complesso che in maniera può essere semplificato in tre aspetti. Il processo di ricerca, ovvero mentre la ricerca è in corso, i risultati della ricerca, ovvero quando la ricerca è giunta a delle conclusioni, l’impatto della ricerca, cioè la discussione degli impatti della ricerca stessa.
Bisogna sempre decidere quale aspetto della ricerca comunicare, perché cambiano sia i toni che i modi per essere raccontati.
Raccontare è una parola chiave strategica. Non bisogna commettere l’errore che la ricerca deve interessare perché è una ricerca importante in sé. A meno che non si stia parlano con i colleghi, l’importanza di una ricerca non è sempre chiara, soprattutto se non si è appartiene a quello specifico settore disciplinare.
Per questo motivo è necessario identificare una leva comunicativa, un elemento di notiziabilità, qualcosa cioè che valga la pena di essere raccontato. E non bisogna avere timore di usare tutte le tecniche a disposizione: un risultato curioso, una credenza che viene sfatata, un aneddoto che è conseguenza della ricerca, una infografica affascinante.
L’obiettivo chiave è catturare l’attenzione, è questo è tanto più vero quanto più si usano i social media per cominciare, in cui il flusso impetuoso di contenuti impedisce di focalizzare l’attenzione su notizie davvero interessanti.
3. DEFINIRE I PUBBLICI A CUI SI STA PARLANDO
La ricerca è un contenuto culturale notiziabile che può interessare pubblici diversi che per semplicità definiremo in tre gruppi: i colleghi (del proprio campo disciplinare o di campi contigui), i giornalisti (specializzati o meno) e i decisori (forze politiche chiamate a legiferare su fenomeni legati alla ricerca). Una delle sfide della comunicazione della ricerca online è che è molto difficile separare questi pubblici, poiché negli spazi dei social media questi pubblici si sovrappongono.
Per questo è necessario avere ben chiaro come comunicare e a chi si sta comunicando, altrimenti si rischiano incomprensioni che potrebbero avere delle conseguenze nel dibattito pubblico.
4. USARE STRATEGICAMENTE I SOCIAL MEDIA (TWITTER)
L’uso strategico dei social media è una assoluta necessità, poiché l’obiettivo è quello di catturare l’attenzione.
Per questo motivo non bisogna avere paura di essere monotematici, nel senso di ripetere senza timore la leva comunicativa che si è deciso di adottare, e soprattutto ridondanti, dire la stessa cosa in modi simili sulle diverse piattaforme se si vuole che il contenuto relativo alla propria ricerca abbia la massima circolazione possibile.
Detto questo bisogna ricordare che esistono diverse piattaforme – Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google Plus, Youtube, Slideshare, Wikipedia – in grado di aiutare in questo scopo.
Ci sono poi piattaforme specializzate – Academia.edu, Research Gate, Scholarpedia, Mendeley – che aiutano a comunicare soprattutto con i colleghi ricercatori.
Se il lavoro con tutti questi strumenti sembra improbo e ci si vuole concentrare su una sola piattaforma, Twitter è la scelta giusta, poiché diverse ricerche confermano la sua validità come strumento per la massima circolazione dei contenuti.
Anche per quanto riguarda la ricerca scientifica.
5. SFRUTTARE TUTTE LE OCCASIONI DI VISIBILITÀ
Avere la possibilità di rivolgersi ai diversi pubblici è un’opportunità da non sottovalutare. Per questo motivo non bisogna avere timore di usare tutte le occasioni a propria disposizione.
Il lavoro che è stato fatto per giungere a un risultato scientifico, merita di essere raccontato, soprattutto per contrastare la narrativa mediale che vuole l’università un posto per clientele e popolato da persone che non si sa come cosa facciano.
