Il web 2.0 ci ha abituato a condividere di tutto: bookmark, foto, filmati, diari personali (AKA blog), presentazioni powerpoint.
Adesso è arrivato il momento di condividere anche i nostri fogli di calcolo (e le relative visualizzazioni).
Da qualche mese a questa parte sono uscite due interessantissime applicazioni che potremmo definire utili per il datasharing, ovvero per la condivisione di fogli di dati e della loro relativa rappresentazione grafica.
Se la cosa vi sembra divertente come una fila all’ufficio postale per pagare una bolletta dovrete ricredervi.
Primo perchè prima o poi nella vita vi capiterà di aver a che fare con una matrice di dati da interpretare, analizzare, studiare, eccetera eccetera.
Secondo perchè i dati sono una forma di comunicazione e se sono rappresentati in forma grafica, questa rappresentazione è molto potente.
Si dice che un’immagine vale più di mille parole. Vero.
Allora un grafico vale più di mille numeri.
Ovviamente io che per mestiere analizzo diverse tipologie di dati, non posso che entusiasmarmi quando vedo che esistono questi servizi in grado di dare un’impostazione web 2.0 anche a roba potenzialmente noiosa (ma solo potenzialmente…).
Il primo servizio è Swivel, definito dai suoi fondatori (Dmitry Dimov e Brian Mulloy) come il “YouTube dei dati”.
Mai paragone fu più azzeccato: prima perchè il sito ha un “gusto” molto web 2.0, secondo perchè una volta loggati l’interfaccia di amministrazione/visualizzazione è molto simile al famoso sito di videosharing.
Cosa ci si può fare con Swivel?
Inserire dati (formato Excel o tab), visualizzare i dati inseriti, usare i dati inseriti da altri utenti, cambiarne le modalità di visualizzazione, comparare dataset diversi alla ricerca di covariazioni.
Qui accanto trovate un esempio di visualizzazione di Swivel (nella fattispecie una grafico relativo alla battaglia delle Termopili, che sta incontrando l’interesse dei media grazie al film “300” tratto dall’omonima graphic novel di Frank – Sin City – Miller)
Interessante il modello di business: se i dati sono pubblici, l’uso del servizio è gratuito. Se si vuole mantenere il dataset riservato, allora bisogna pagare un certo prezzo.
La logica è chiara: Swivel mira a diventare un motore di ricerca per i dati.
Un altro sito per il datasharing piuttosto interessante è Many Eyes.
E’ un progetto dei laboratori IBM che fa riferimento a Martin Wattenberg e Fernanda Viegas, già autori dello strepitoso History Flow, progetto per la visualizzazione delle modifiche apportate ad alcune voci di Wikipedia.
Many Eyes è un po’ diverso da Swivel: si possono fare le stesse cose di base (ricerca, condivisione, visualizzazione) con la differenza che non si possono comparare i dataset e non è previsto (per ora) la possibilità di usare dataset da mantenere riservati.
Many Eyes però fa qualcosa in più: ha un numero maggiore di visualizzazione dei dati, anche dati in formato testo (cosa che Swivel non fa).
Io per esempio qui sotto l’ho usato per visualizzare il numero di volte con cui si presentano alcune parole nella canzone di Simone Cristicchi “Ti regalerò una rosa“.
La mia domanda a quato punto diventa: quale il futuro di questi servizi per il datasharing?
O – meglio – diventerà il web uno strumento per lo sviluppo di tutta una serie di servizi pensati per un pubblico specializzato (tipo coloro che vogliono analizzare i dati?).
Insomma: è l’alba di una nuova classe di servizi web 2.0?
