E’ ormai qualche anno che i social media – e Twitter in particolare – sono diventati spazi in cui discutere, tifare, seguire la cerimonia degli Oscar.
Non è un caso se il famoso selfie di Ellen DeGeneres con molti attori vincitori o candidati Oscar sia stato uno dei più retwittati di sempre.

Quest’anno si sono diffuse diverse analisi che hanno provato a rispondere alla fatidica domanda: è possibile attraverso l’ascolto dei social media prevedere o comunque anticipare di qualche giorno chi avrebbe vinto gli Oscar nelle diverse categorie?
Per chi va di fretta: la risposta è si, ma come tutte le cose ha bisogno di una certa contestualizzazione.
Oltre che per gli appassionati di cinema, il tema è di interesse per tutti i sociologi del digitale.
Infatti questi studi permettono di avanzare la nostra conoscenza nel campo della cultural analytics (o culturomics) ovvero lo studio dei fenomeni culturali attraverso l’uso dei Big data. In secondo luogo l’argomento è interessante in quanto non è chiaro quali siano le metriche da usare per prevedere il successo dei film (e degli attori): tweet? followers? Retweet? sentiment? Like sulla pagina?
In questa mia descrizione di questi lavori, mi concentrerò anche sulle previsioni sbagliate, in quanto una previsione sbagliata dice molto di più di una previsione corretta.
Way to blue: 6 previsioni, 5 corrette
Il primo studio che prendiamo in considerazione è quello dell’agenzia Way to Blue che è stato fatto per conto della testata online specializzata in cinematografia The Wrap.
Lo studio ha preso in considerazione due metriche valutate in maniera separata: la prima è il volume, ovvero quanti tweet facevano riferimento al film (o attore se il premiato avrebbe dovuto essere un attore). la seconda metrica usata è il desiderio di vincere (desire to win) che prende in considerazione i tweet che dichiaravano esplicitamente chi avrebbe voluto che vincesse.
Le previsioni corrette sono state: Miglior film (12 anni schiavo), miglior regista (Alfonso Cuaron), miglior attore (Matthew McConaughey), miglior attrice (Cate Blanchett), miglior attore non protagonista (Jared Leto).
Non ha funzionato con il premio alla miglior attrice non protagonista Lupita Nyong’o, probabilmente perché l’attrice era completamente sconosciuta al pubblico.

Come si può vedere la metrica che ha funzionato meglio è proprio il desiderio di vincere (concettualmente simile a sentiment), che ha funzionato per 5 previsioni su 6.

L’altro studio molto interessante è stato quello di UberVU, la piattaforma di social analytics recentemente acquistata da Hootsuite.
Le metriche utilizzate sono state diverse e tutte prese in considerazione in maniera separata: sentiment, exposure (che consiste nell’ammontare giornaliero delle visualizzazioni che si possono ricevere a partire dai follower della rete dell’autore del tweet), mention relative a film/attori retwittate, preferite, condivise.
Le metriche che hanno funzionato meglio sono state sentiment e exposure: non basta essere molto retwittati, ma serve un sentiment positivo oppure una rete molto ampia. La metrica che ha funzionato di meno è stata engagement (preferiti, retweet, condivisioni).
